Many articles that are negative toward e-cigs falsely try to tie e-cigs toward another plot by tobacco companies to manipulate the public, and especially teens.  For good reason, these companies have become caricatures of evil incarnate, preying on the innocent through sophisticated marketing techniques and secretively supporting the addiction of nicotine.   There are enough facts available to show that these companies did try to hide some important facts about the dangers of smoking from the consumer.  However, you would think that if these tobacco companies were as good at marketing as they are claimed to be, they would not have allowed themselves to become the poster children of evil they are perceived to be.

The fact is that e-cigs were not invented by the tobacco companies, which have always been more focused on agricultural products than on electronics.  But don’t believe me, take a look at Wikipedia.   Tobacco companies did not immediately develop nicotine based e-cigs once the technology became available.  It has only been recently that tobacco companies have grudgingly begun to compete in the e-cigarette space.  They’ve entered because they realized that their market was changing, much like so many, and these electronic nicotine delivery devices were not a fad but were here to stay.  They probably would have preferred to keep the genie in the bottle, and manage a business that brings in $80 billion annually in the U.S. with a stable, tightly regulated market.

Instead there is a real open market competition underway, and ironically the one thing that will affect that is if regulations come down that hamper innovation.  All that regulation will do is put big tobacco companies right back to where they are best suited to win.
