October 30, 2012 / Forbes Tech / — Electronic cigarettes have recently been marketed and promoted as a “safe” alternative to traditional tobacco smoking, but based on recent research, this popular and growing trend could be just as harmful to your lungs and overall health. It is estimated that nearly 700,000 people currently use these electronic pens in order to quit smoking. Electronic cigarettes deliver nicotine through a vapor as opposed to smoke. Although no combustion is involved, the nicotine is still derived from tobacco. This method of delivery has been thought to be potentially less harmful than smoking tobacco. The devices are imported from China and their nicotine content is currently not regulated prior to sale or...

The two-pronged study tested the effects...

September 18, 2012 / Forbes Tech / — Hookah bars and cafes have been popping up more frequently throughout the US, promoted as a recreational and social activity that is potentially safer than cigarette smoking. Unfortunately, based on recent research and available evidence, smoking from a hookah pipe is not safer than cigarette smoking. It is actually more harmful in many respects. A hookah is essentially a water pipe with an integrated smoke chamber, attached to a large bowl with a small hose attachment. As a special form of tobacco is heated, the smoke passes through water in a confined chamber to cool it, and then moves through a hose attached to a mouthpiece. The water within the hookah in no way acts as a filter for the...

October 29, 2012 / Forbes / — Four new studies offer powerful evidence of the dangers of smoking and the health benefits of quitting or not being exposed to secondhand smoke. Smoking in the UK– Between 1996 and 2001 the Million Women Study started following more than one million women aged 50 to 65 years of age. In a report published in the Lancet, trial investigators, including renowned epidemiologist Richard Peto, found that 12-year mortality was significantly higher in women with a history of smoking compared to women who never smoked (rate ratio 2.76, CI 2.71-2.81). Smokers, the authors calculated, lose 10 years of life. The good news is that stopping smoking before the age of 40 reduces the excess mortality by 90%. Smoking...

Background on Smoking

Posted By :

Smoking, in simple words, means drawing and exhaling smoke from a cigarette, cigar, or pipe. Tobacco smoke contains a stimulant, ‘nicotine’ which is as highly an addictive drug as heroin or cocaine. Recent studies by the National Institute of Health suggest that nicotine is actually a “gateway” drug that leads to an increased likelihood of illicit drug use and addiction, by increasing the effect of drugs such as cocaine, heroin, and marijuana. In the long run, nicotine forms in the user a strong physical and psychological dependence. Dependence is strongest when tobacco smoke is inhaled into the lungs and with time it increases the speed and quantity of nicotine absorption. But, is nicotine that highly addictive? The answer...
